Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Saturday 11.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

The avalanche danger increases when the temperature increases. Avoid potential release areas and runout areas for avalanches in the evening. At higher altitudes avoid areas with wind-deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies.

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Mildt vær i starten av uka har ført til at snødekket ble gjennomfuktet og generelt stabilt opp til ca 800 moh. Torsdag var det snøbyger i fjellet og kraftig vind fra V som flyttet på det meste av løs snø. Fredag gir bygevær litt nysnø, men under ca 400 moh er snøoverflaten fuktig og i lavlandet er det generelt lite snø.

5 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southwest. -4 °C to 2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Saturday 11. January 2020

20 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from south. -4 °C to 2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Stigende temperatur siste del av dagen i kombinasjon med lokalt mye nedbør fører til mulighet for naturlig utløste våte skred i lavlandet om ettermiddagen og kvelden.

Påfyll av nysnø i fjellet i kombinasjon med vind gjør at det vil legge seg opp ustabile nysnøflak som kan være lett å løse ut, særlig i leområder. Forholdsvis høy temperatur fører til at nysnøen stabiliseres hurtig.
